Fats Definition:

Fats or lipids are made of fatty acids (saturated, polyunsaturated, monosaturated, triglycerides, phospholipids, glycolipid etc. fats are solid at 20 degree Celsius. They are called “oil” if they are liquid at that temperature.

Fats are also known as lipids. Fat supplies main energy to the body. Fats are organic compounds which are composed of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. Fats are insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents like ether, benzene or chloroform. Smaller unit of fat is termed as fatty acids.

Fat is an organic substance which is composed of the elements like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen. They formed by the combination of glycerol and fatty acid.

What is Good Fats?

Monosaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are known as the good fats, because they are good for our heart, cholesterol and our overall health.

Monosaturated Fats List:

It includes-

  1. Olive oil,
  2. Canola oil,
  3. Sunflower oil,
  4. Peanut oil,
  5. Sesame oil,
  6. Avocados,
  7. Olives,
  8. Nuts (Almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews),
  9. Peanut butter.

Polyunsaturated Fats List:

It includes-

  1. Soybean oil,
  2. Corn oil,
  3. Safflower oil,
  4. Walnuts,
  5. Sunflower, sesame, and pumpkin seeds,
  6. Flaxseed,
  7. Fatty fish (Salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, trout, sardines),
  8. Soymilk,
  9. Tofu.

What is Bad Fats?

Saturated fats and Trans fats are termed as the bad fats, because they increase our risk of disease and elevate cholesterol. Appearance-wise, saturated fats and Trans fats tend to be solid at room temperature (Think of butter or traditional stick margarine), while monosaturated and polysaturated fats tend to be liquid (Think of olive or corn oil).

Saturated Fats List:

It includes-

  1. Chicken with the skin,
  2. High fat cuts of meat (Beef, lamb, pork),
  3. Whole-fat dairy products (milk and cream),
  4. Butter,
  5. Cheese,
  6. Ice cream,
  7. Palm and coconut oil.

Trans Fats List:

It includes-

  1. Commercially-backed pastries, cookies, doughnuts, muffins, cakes, pizza dough,
  2. Packaged snack foods (crackers, microwave popcorn, chips),
  3. Stick margarine,
  4. Vegetable shortening,
  5. Fried foods (French fries, fried chicken, chicken nuggets, breaded fish),
  6. Candy bars.
