What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Euthanasia?

What is Euthanasia?
Euthanasia is the painless killing of a patient, who is suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma by withholding extreme medical measures or using of a fatal dose of a drug.

Advantages of Euthanasia in Humans:
There have many arguments against euthanasia. But some important advantages of euthanasia are listed in the below:

  1. The right to die must be a matter of private choice.
  2. Health is more important than length.
  3. Euthanasia is another case of freedom of choice.
  4. It should be patient decide whether or not they want to die.
  5. Life of suffering and pain can be as bad as death.
  6. Euthanasia provides a path to relieve extreme pain (Painless death).
  7. It ends the suffering of the dying.
  8. It gives dignity to a dying a person.
  9. It is humane.
  10. Speedy termination of physical and emotional sufferings.
  11. Saves family money.
  12. Stops relatives suffering, watching their loved ones suffer a painful death.
  13. The organ can be put to good use.
  14. When a person’s quality of life is low, it provides a way of relief.
  15. Frees up medical funds to help other people.
  16. It would stop doctors from breaking the law when they let someone die on purpose.

Disadvantages of Euthanasia in Humans:
Many people believe that religious, moral, and ethical values all must take importance and death should become naturally. Euthanasia is not good for all time. Some disadvantages listed in the following:

  1. Euthanasia devalues human life.
  2. Euthanasia can become a means of health care cost limitation.
  3. Doctors and other health care personnel should not be involved in directly causing death.
  4. Religious grounds: it is immortal for Muslims, Catholics and other religious beliefs.
  5. Common sense grounds: euthanasia is permanent.
  6. It goes against ethics.
  7. Could be abused.
  8. Unnecessary due to advances in palliative care.
  9. The dying individual may not be able to think clear enough.
  10. Patients can be talked into euthanasia for the wrong reasons.
  11. Patients may not believe their doctors to keep them alive.
  12. Euthanasia is no better than murder.
  13. It is not fair to expect doctors to kill their patients.
  14. There are special places for terminally sick people to have cared for therefore euthanasia is not essential.
  15. If the patient is incapable to make a decision, who has the right to decide whether they live or don't?
  16. Mistakes can happen, is diagnosis and prescription from the doctor’s side.
  17. It goes against the sanctity of life principle.
  18. It is against the oath of physicians.
  19. This can urge the other people to do the same.
